Opinion: Living With Epilepsy — Ways To Manage Seizures And Improve Quality of Life

Dr Divya Nagabushana
Epilepsy affects an estimated 50 million people worldwide, making it one of the most common neurological disorders. In India alone, approximately 12 million people are living with epilepsy. The unpredictable nature of seizures can significantly impact daily life, affecting work, relationships, and overall well-being. However, with the right strategies and a strong support system, many individuals with epilepsy can successfully manage their condition and lead fulfilling lives. There are various approaches to managing seizures, improving quality of life, and creating a supportive environment, empowering people with epilepsy to navigate their condition with confidence and resilience.

Adherence To Treatment Plans

The cornerstone of epilepsy management is consistent adherence to prescribed antiseizure medications (ASMs). Missing doses increase the risk of seizures, making it vital to follow the treatment regimen. For some individuals, alternative therapies such as surgery, neuromodulation, or dietary therapy such as ketogenic diet may be necessary in addition to medications. It’s essential to communicate with a neurologist or specialists in epilepsy (epileptologists) about any side-effects or concerns, so that the treatment plan can be adjusted as needed.

Identifying Triggers And Adjusting

Identifying and managing seizure triggers, such as stress, sleep deprivation, flashing lights, alcohol, or certain foods, is the key to reducing seizure frequency. Keeping a seizure journal can help track triggers, allowing for adjustments like reducing/avoiding alcohol intake, practising stress-relief techniques, and ensuring proper sleep hygiene.

Educating Others And Creating A Support System

Creating an understanding and supportive environment is crucial. Educating family, friends, and colleagues about epilepsy and emergency response can reduce feelings of isolation. Participating in support groups online or in person can also provide a sense of community and encouragement.

Maintaining A Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate hydration, is vital in seizure management. Exercise improves mood, reduces stress, and may enhance seizure control. To ensure safety, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider before starting a new fitness routine.

Stress Management

Stress is a common seizure trigger, and managing it is essential. Techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing can help reduce stress levels. Additionally, addressing anxiety or depression through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can improve emotional well-being and seizure control.

Regular Medical Check-ups

Regular visits to a healthcare provider are critical for monitoring seizure activity, and adjusting treatments as necessary. Some individuals benefit from wearable technology or seizure-monitoring systems to track their condition and provide real-time updates. Regular check-ups ensure success in managing epilepsy.

Mental And Emotional Well-being

The emotional impact of living with epilepsy, such as feelings of loneliness or anxiety, should not be overlooked. Building a strong support network, seeking counselling, and practising self-care are essential for maintaining mental health alongside physical well-being.
Living with epilepsy requires support, awareness, and self-care. While seizures may occur occasionally, they don’t define a person. By adhering to treatment plans, identifying triggers, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking support, individuals with epilepsy can take control of their condition and lead fulfilling lives. Proper management significantly improves overall quality of life.

Understanding Neuromuscular Dentistry

{By: Dr. Parthasarathi Reddy, Founder Chairman FMS Dental Hyderabad}
Neuromuscular dentistry is an advanced field of dental care that focuses on achieving harmony between the teeth, jaw joints and muscles to create a balanced bite and improve overall oral health. It’s about understanding the functional relationship between all the parts of the mouth and ensuring they work together smoothly. Unlike traditional dentistry, which focuses mainly on treating visible dental problems like cavities or gum disease, neuromuscular dentistry takes into account the muscles, nerves and joints that control jaw movement. It’s about understanding the functional relationship between all the parts of the mouth and ensuring they work together smoothly. This approach is especially beneficial for individuals suffering from chronic jaw pain, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain and other symptoms related to misaligned bites.
ALSO READ: Genetic Testing And Lung Cancer: Assessing Risk Factors
Is Neuromuscular Dentistry For All Age Groups
Individuals experiencing neuromuscular problems usually fall in the age group between 20 to 70 years, and incidences are more between 30 to 50 years. Women seem to be more affected. Premature loss of teeth, night grinding habits, severe erosional wear of teeth, temporomandibular joint issues, psycho-somatic issues and many other reasons can trigger the symptoms.
Benefits Of Treating Neuromuscular Symptoms
The benefits of neuromuscular dentistry extend beyond simply treating dental issues. Patients experience:

Relief from chronic pain: Effective in addressing headaches, jaw pain and muscle tension.
Improved jaw function: Better chewing and speaking abilities due to a balanced bite.
Enhanced quality of life: Many patients see a significant improvement in their overall well-being after neuromuscular treatments.

By addressing the underlying causes of pain and discomfort, neuromuscular dentistry provides long-lasting results that improve daily life.
When To Consult A Neuromuscular Dentist
Certain signs and symptoms can indicate that a visit to a neuromuscular dentist is necessary for TMJ Disorder (TMD).These include:

Frequent chronic unilateral headaches
Pain or stiffness in the jaw, neck or shoulders
Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the jaw
Difficulty chewing or biting
Teeth grinding, especially at night

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, neuromuscular dentistry could help by diagnosing and treating the root cause rather than just the symptoms.
Technology Employed In Neuromuscular Dentistry
Neuromuscular dentistry uses cutting edge technology to diagnose problems in the muscles and joints of the jaw. Diagnostic tools like Electromyography (EMG) measure the electrical activity of the muscles, while Joint vibration analysis (JVA) detects irregularities in the jaw joints. Tekscan (T-Scan) is a digital occlusion analysis tool that evaluates bite dynamics and contact timing, helping to diagnose and achieve proper tooth occlusion. Another tool, the Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machine, helps to relax the jaw muscles and determine their optimal position.
Once the diagnosis is made, treatment plans may include the use of orthotic devices to correct the bite, physical therapy to strengthen the jaw muscles and in some cases, orthodontic treatments or restorative dental work.
Neuromuscular Dentistry For Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)
TMJ disorders (TMD) can significantly impact daily activities, making simple actions like talking, chewing and even yawning uncomfortable or painful. Neuromuscular dentistry helps by focusing on the alignment of the jaw to alleviate pressure on the temporo-mandibular joint. This reduces inflammation and restores normal jaw function, offering much needed relief for those with TMJ issues.
How Neuromuscular Dentistry Improves Oral Health
Beyond alleviating pain, neuromuscular dentistry also helps in maintaining long term oral health. A misaligned bite can cause excessive wear on the teeth, leading to erosion, cavities and even tooth loss. By correcting the bite, patients can protect their teeth and gums from future damage, promoting a healthier mouth overall. Neuromuscular dentists have skill and experience in diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular problems and they should be able to provide long term relief for their patients.

Tishaa Kumar, daughter of former actor and T-Series co-owner Krishan Kumar and former actress Tanya Singh, passed away at the age of just 20 years in July this year. Just a day ago, debunking the reports that had emerged after the young girl’s death blaming cancer as the cause of death, the grieving mother shared on her Instagram profile that Tishaa was a victim of gross misdiagnosis and incorrect medical treatment.
What Tanya Singh said
Tanya Singh wrote: ‘”How,What,Why’ A lot of people have been writing and asking me to tell what happened… …she had a vaccine at age 15&1/2 which possibly triggered an autoimmune situation , which was wrongly diagnosed(we did not know this at the time).” Fighting to cope with the irreparable loss, Tanya sought to help avert a similar tragedy striking other homes. She continued in the post: “Parents, if, God forbid your child just has ‘lymph node swellings’~ PLEASE make sure to get a second & third opinion before going in for a ‘bone-marrow’ test or a biopsy. Lymph nodes are the body’s defence guards & they can also swell due to emotional trauma, etc, or due to a previous infection not treated fully. We were already sucked into the ‘medical trap’ much before all this information found us…I pray daily that no kid should ever have to face this cruel world of medical traps or hidden negative forces.”

Sadly, the family must cope with the fact that the child is no more – whether it was a case of maltreatment or not. Whether it was Lymphoma (a type of cancer that begins in the lymph nodes or in the bone marrow, the spleen, or the intestinal tract) or was an autoimmune reaction triggered by the vaccine, causing inflammation, it creates numerous concerns for parents that we sought answers for from practicing medical experts.
What are lymph nodes?
Each one of us have lymph nodes in our body. These bean-shaped, pea-sized mounds of tissue form a network of clusters throughout the body and are essential to our survival. They are one part of the immune system that helps defend the body against health threats. According to Harvard Health, lymph nodes filter lymphatic fluid (lymph), a white-yellow fluid that originates in the bloodstream.
What are swollen lymph glands?
Harvard Health states that the term "swollen glands" usually refers to enlarged lymph nodes and are not actually glands but small bundles of white blood cells that are present in multiple areas throughout our body.
An imaging test such as a CT or an MRI scan can show that the human body has hundreds of lymph nodes and are most noticeable — in the neck, armpits, and groin — as well as in the chest and abdomen.
What is the role of lymph nodes?
Our lymph nodes literally checks lymphatic fluid for infection or other potential triggers of illness. It is like a vigilant guard mechanism that keeps looking if any unwanted elements have infiltrated the system and creating a threat to the health or life. If threats are found, white cells called lymphocytes, and other immune cells within the lymph nodes, identify and try to eliminate them. The protocol that lymph nodes follow: Detect and eliminate infectious organisms and microbes
Remove abnormal cells, including cancer cells and precancerous cells
Eliminate damaged cells or by products of metabolism that might cause illness.
When do lymph nodes swell and what to do?
If lymph nodes get enlarged and become tender, it is most likely that they're doing their job, especially when reacting to an infection. But soon, as soon as the crisis is over, they should return to normal promptly when the infection resolves.
Here is what Dr Rajanshu Tiwari, Consultant Diabetologist and Physician, Chembur, Mumbai said when asked what can trigger an autoimmune disorder/reaction in a seemingly perfectly healthy individual, “Drug induced Immune response is seen in 5-10% patients. This is generally a mild reaction with most patients recover from this. It is basically an immune

December 1 Is World AIDS Day: What Is The Difference Between HIV And AIDS?

World AIDS Day: December 1 is observed as World AIDS Day. The world has observed this day since 1988 to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma, and to remember the lives lost, but most people know very little about what HIV is and what AIDS is — and why World AIDS Day is important.
What Is The Difference Between HIV And AIDS?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV weakens your immune system by destroying your T-cells.
What are T-Cells?
Just as sensitive locations are fortified by sentry trained to fight off infiltrators and terrorists, our body's immune system has T-Cells that guard this precious asset. The role of T cells in the immune system is twofold, says a Harvard report. One is attacking illness-causing cells like bacteria, viruses and cancer and the second is “remembering” past invaders — the body's way of ensuring that it can spot a threat and mount a rapid defence during subsequent encounters with the same pathogens.
It is these T-Cells that the HIV virus goes for as soon as it enters the body. Over a period of time, the infected person is unable to fight off even minor illnesses. One can have HIV without any symptoms. Getting tested and starting treatment early gives a potential patient the best chance of living a long life.
What Is HIV? Why Is It Called A Retrovirus?
As stated earlier, the acronym HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. This invasive virus infects and destroys cells of one's immune system, making it hard to fight off other diseases. But it does not take the infected person's body to full-blown AIDS stage immediately. When HIV has severely weakened one's immune system, it can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Because HIV works backward to insert its instructions into the affected person's DNA, it is called a retrovirus.
What Is AIDS?
Without treatment, HIV infection advances in stages, getting worse over time as it tramples over the body's defence mechanism — the immune system — and eventually causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The three stages of HIV infection are (a) acute HIV infection, (b) chronic HIV infection, and (c) acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is the final and most serious stage by which time the patient has very low counts of certain white blood cells and a severely damaged immune system. At this stage, additional illnesses such as opportunistic infections like Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, infection-related cancers, etc. may creep in.
How Does HIV Progress To AIDS?
Once the HIV virus has entered a person's body, the patient may initially feel sick with flu-like symptoms. The virus can hide in the human body for a long time without causing noticeable symptoms while slowly destroying the T-cells. When the T-cells get very low or when the patient begins to get certain illnesses that people with healthy immune systems don’t get, HIV has progressed to AIDS.
What Is The significance Of The Red Ribbon Symbol?
According to the World AIDS Day official website, the red ribbon is the universal symbol of awareness and support for people living with HIV. First devised in 1991 by twelve artists who met to discuss a new project for Visual AIDS, a New York HIV-awareness arts organisation, the red ribbon has become one of the most recognised symbols of the decade. It is worn to signify awareness and support for people living with HIV — as a visual expression of compassion for people living with HIV. The red colour was chosen for its striking boldness, and for its symbolic associations with passion, the heart and love.
How Does HIV AIDS Spread?
HIV is spread — among other processes — via unprotected sexual intercourse between an infected person and a non-infected person. It spreads through contact with genitals, such as during sex without a condom, says the Mayo Clinic website. Such a sexually transmitted infection is also called an STI. HIV can also spread through unsafe blood transfusion where the donor's blood is contaminated, or with other modes of contact with blood — such as when people share needles or syringes. An untreated HIV infected mother can also spread the virus to a child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.
When Will The HIV-AIDS Epidemic End?
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates say that globally, 39.9 million (36.1–44.6 million) people were living with HIV at the end of 2023. As for the figure in India, as per the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), the number of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) are estimated at around 24 lakh. According to the United Nations, with human rights at the centre and with communities in the lead, the world can end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Over the years, substantial progress has been made in the HIV response while still protecting human rights,
